The dynamic duo

Husband and wife partnerships may be nothing new in the photography business, but Jon and Angela Munn, owners of West Sussex-based Janda Photography, take their collaboration one step further. Both are photographers and, when it comes to wedding shoots, they always work together, dividing their time and responsibilities to offer a unique service to clients. We spoke to Angela to find out more about how the couple works and why AsukaBook is their first choice for presenting their images.

AsukaBook: Can you explain how the husband and wife dynamic works on wedding shoots?

Angela Munn: I start the day off with the girls and Jon is with the boys, so we're able to capture everything as opposed to being with one and then flitting across to the other. We've found it works really well. Once we get to the ceremony,
I position myself towards the front and Jon's at the back of the church - it's the same if it's a civil ceremony - that way we can get in position and just stay there so we're not moving around or disturbing the service in any way.

We try and keep group pictures to a minimum; if couples want them then we'll do them. Again we work with each other. Jon and I have been a couple for nearly 23 years and worked together for the last ten so for us we know instinctively what the other is doing. It's all pretty seamless.

Would you say your approach is unique?

We haven't met another couple in terms of both being photographers in their own right. The husband and wife teams we know still split their time between bride and groom. To date, we haven't met anyone who works the same way as we do, but it's one of the key reasons why clients choose us.

Describe your photographic style.

We find a reportage style works for the ceremony itself and the speeches, but otherwise it's about chatting to people, making them feel comfortable and ensuring they're in good lighting. We explain to clients that a lot of our shots look like reportage but are actually set up. We always want the shots to be a true reflection of the people.

How do you go about relaxing people?

We always do a pre-wedding shoot. The majority of couples are nervous and don't think they take a good picture. It's an opportunity for us to see what they're like together, learn more about their personalities, what their plans are for the day, how they met; it's about building up a picture. Then on the day if the couple are comfortable and relaxed it really does filter down to everybody else who is there.

How long has Janda been using AsukaBook?

Four years. We've always offered coffee table books as we found more of our couples wanted to go that way as opposed to traditional albums. We were using another supplier, but we saw AsukaBook at a show and were really impressed with the print quality and paper stock. We felt they would fit in with how we worked and what we did.

At first we did offer an awful lot of products, but it confused couples so we went through the AsukaBook range in more detail to decide what we were going to offer. Now we supply the Book Bound Soft Cover and the Book Bound EX. Both have a high quality look and feel with coated pages that preserve the images.

How many books do clients typically purchase?

It varies from client to client - one had 16, but most normally have one or two. We're always trying to promote additional books, as they're such a cost effective way of having copies of the images.

For parents, the 8-inch book is popular as is the 5-inch softback that can be given as presents to bridesmaids or carried in a handbag and shown to friends. We always make sure we put our name and contact details in the back for some subliminal advertising!

What other benefits do the books have?

With AsukaBook you can be as creative as you like. We're totally in control of the final product, which is really important to us. We have samples that we show couples at the meeting stage but once it's their wedding and their book there's nothing better than that. It gives us great job satisfaction.
